Safe Staffing Levels

The National Quality Board, sponsored by the Chief Nursing Officer in England, has published a guide to support providers and commissioners in making the right decisions about nursing and care staffing capacity and capability: ‘How to ensure the right people, with the right skills, are in the right place at the right time: A guide to nursing, midwifery and care staffing capacity and capability’.

From April 2014 all hospitals are required to publish information about staffing levels on wards, including the percentage of shifts meeting their agreed staffing levels.

This initiative is part of the NHS response to the Francis report which called for greater openness and transparency in the health service.

Each month, we will publish information about our staffing levels and provide links to papers discussed in public at our Trust Board meetings.

Service users, carers and visitors can see a poster in every in-patient ward at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust showing the planned and actual number of nursing and care staff for day and night shifts.
