North West ambulance Services are looking for Community First Responders in St Helens

Who are Community First Responders?

These are volunteers who have been trained to attend 999 calls and provide basic lifesaving skills until the ambulance arrives. They do this within the local community where they live or work, with telephone support from trained staff.

Why do we need them?

The sooner a person having a heart attack gets treatment, the higher their chance of
survival.

Who can become a Community First Responder?

A CFR must:

Be over 18 and physically fit
Be able to reach a reasonable standard of ability after training
Have a sympathetic, caring approach to people
Be a respected member of the community with a mature outlook on life
Be able to work as part of a team
Be honest, trustworthy, reliable and compassionate

No previous experience is needed.

Is there any support after dealing with a serious incident?

Following all serious incidents, someone from the ambulance service would be available to offer any relevant help or support.

Would there be any emergencies that a CFR would not be asked to attend?

There are certain emergencies which CFR’s are not asked to attend. These are emergencies which are considered unsafe for their welfare such as Road Traffic Accidents (RTC’s) or violent situations.
